Election 2002 Timetable
Return of the writ: On or before Friday 15th March 2002

Close of Roll: 12 noon Tuesday 22 January

Close of Nominations: 12 noon Friday 25 January

 

- Pre poll voting available from Tuesday 29 January until 5 pm Friday 8 Febuary 2002

- Completed postal vote application forms must be received by 5pm Thursday 7 February 2002


Polling Day: Saturday 9 February 2002

Return of the writ:
On or before Friday 15th March 2002

What is the time frame for holding an election?

Writ to polling:

Minimum time frame for holding an election 25 days
Maximum time frame for holding an election 55 days

Process as follows:

  • Issue of the writ

  • Close of the roll
    Rolls close not less than 7 days nor more than 10 days after the issue of the Writ
    Electoral Act s48(3)

  • Close of nominations
    Nominations close not less than 3 days nor more than 14 days after the close of the roll
    Electoral Act s48(4)

  • Polling day
    A Saturday falling not less than 14 days nor more than 30 days after the close of nominations
    Electoral Act s48(5)

  • Return of writ
    Date specified in Writ

  • Parliament sits
    Within 12 calendar months of last sitting
    Constitution Act s7

Earliest date for the next general elections is 3 years after parliament first sat following the last election, plus minimum time frame required for holding an election (25 days).

Latest date for the next general elections is 4 years after parliament first sat within a maximum time frame for holding an election.
